A Styling Guide for Fall Family Photos from a NYC and Long Island Lifestyle Photographer
You found the photographer and the location, but now you’re stumped on what everyone should wear. The outfits you choose for your session have a bigger impact on your final images than you may realize.
This fall styling guide is here to make that part a little easier. I’m sharing styling dos and don’ts, along with tips for choosing outfits that work together while still feeling like your family.

Fall Styling Do’s and Don’ts
Coordinate rather than match: Choose colors and pieces that complement one another without everyone wearing the same thing or color. Coordinating colors will create a more natural and varied look. Keep a limit of 1-2 people in denim with noticeably different shades. Don’t forget about footwear. Shoes are part of the overall look, so ditch the running sneakers and choose styles and colors that complement your outfits and the setting.
Mix neutrals with colors and prints: Start with a few neutral pieces, then add in subtle prints, patterns or texture to create visual interest. Think corduroy, knit sweaters, soft floral prints and neutral plaid pieces. Keep multiple and matching plaids at home.
Incorporate texture: Knits, corduroy, plaid, wool, lace and textured fabrics add dimension and help keep everyone from blending together in group photos.
Layer and accessorize: Not only do layers help keep little ones warm and happy, they add variety to your images. Hats, sweaters, jackets, cardigans, scarves, and other outerwear give us more options throughout your session and are a great way to incorporate texture into your outfits.
Choose a color palette: Select 2–3 colors that work well together rather than trying to find one color for everyone. Balance the remaining pieces with neutrals to create a cohesive look. Even if you prefer a neutral palette, incorporate different shades of cream, tan, and brown for variety, and don’t be afraid to add a pop of color. As always, navy shouldn’t be included in your color palette.
Prioritize movement and comfort: Choose clothing that allows your children to run, play, cuddle and be themselves. When your child can move comfortably, they’re more likely to relax and interact naturally. Flowing fabrics are especially great for creating movement and visual interest in your images.
