A Outfit & Color Palette Guide for Fall Family Photos from a NYC and Long Island Lifestyle Photographer
You found the photographer and the location and learned the best dos and don’ts for fall family photos on my previous blog. Now you’re wondering which color palette may be best for your family. This guide is filled with fall color combinations and outfit ideas to help you see how different colors, textures and patterns can work together. Use these palettes as a starting point, then mix and match pieces to create a look that feels like your family.

Some of my favorite fall color combinations may not be what you’d expect. It’s not all plaid and orange. Think deep, rich colors that complement the changing leaves and browning grass, like deep purple, mustard, dusty blue and rust. I recommend steering clear of bright or neon colors, which can compete with the natural surroundings. I also recommend avoiding navy, as it can feel too cool and heavy against the warm tones of the fall landscape. Below are five sample color palettes, each with outfit ideas to help you visualize how the colors can work together.

Hopefully these color palettes and outfit ideas make planning your fall session a little easier. You don’t need to recreate any of these looks exactly. Use them as inspiration, mix and match pieces you already own and choose colors and textures that feel like your family.
If you’re booking a full Fall Foliage session, you’ll also have access to my Client Closet, personalized styling guidance and shoppable links to help bring your vision together. If you’ve booked a Fall Petite Experience or Fall Micro Mini, these are a great starting point for planning your outfits.
